Our Story
Woods Trade Supplies began its journey in 1969 as L.G. Wood & Son, founded from the family home in Sandown by Dave Wood and his father Len Wood.
Having just completed his plumbing apprenticeship, Dave joined his father, who brought more than 23 years of experience, to establish their own plumbing and heating business.
What began around the family kitchen table would eventually develop into the Woods Trade Supplies you see across the Isle of Wight today.
From 1969 to Today
Where It All Began
L.G. Wood & Son was founded from the family home in Sandown by Dave Wood and his father Len, initially operating as a plumbing and heating business.
A Growing Island Business
By the early 1970s, the company had moved into its first premises on George Street as demand for modern central heating systems increased across the Isle of Wight.
A major turning point came when the business secured a Southern Gas Board contract, leading to rapid expansion from just three fitters to 28 in only a few years.
From Plumbing Contractor to Trade Supplies
During this period, the idea of selling surplus stock led to the beginnings of a retail operation. That side of the business steadily developed into what would eventually become Woods Trade Supplies.
The company continued to grow, relocating to larger premises before establishing its base in Shanklin and later expanding with branches in Ryde and Newport.
A Family Tradition Continues
Dave's wife Jenny became a partner in the business, and their children Darren, Adam and Donna all became involved, continuing the strong Wood family tradition.
Over the years, Woods developed into a trusted local supplier of bathroom, plumbing and heating products, combining product knowledge with personal service and reliability.
Passing the Business to the Next Generation
When the COVID-19 pandemic arrived in 2020, Dave and Jenny made the decision to retire after decades of dedication, leaving the business in the hands of the next generation.
Still Independent. Still Family Run.
Today, Woods Trade Supplies remains proudly family-run, with a dedicated team serving customers from our Shanklin, Newport and Ryde branches.
More than five decades after the business began, we continue to serve both professional tradespeople and homeowners with the same focus on service, knowledge, reliability and value.
